Quick tips to rank better in Google

In reality, there is no quick fix for bad SEO — it’s an iterative process that takes time. But there are steps you can start taking today in order to rank better in Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

To get started, it’s important to figure out which keywords you want to be associated with your brand, and which keywords people will use to find your organization.

Figuring out your brand identity

This is a mix between understanding how others will naturally understand your organization, and also determining how you want people to think of you. For instance, if you are a nonprofit focused on the cure for a disease, you might want people to find you by Googling “best nonprofit in the world,” but most likely people with an interest will be searching “Cure for X” or “help cure X.” Then, create a tagline for your organization which fits both how you want to be positioned, and how people would search for you. As an example, check out abc2.org, the website for a leading brain cancer cure organization. Their tagline is “Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure”: it’s straightforward, but also punchy, throwing in the verb that they wish to associate themselves with, “accelerate.”

Discover how people are already finding you

Make sure you have Google Analytics and other data-centric tools set up, which will allow you to easily see what search terms people are using to find your organization, and what pages those keywords are linked to. Take content which is already doing well, and push it further by trying to get the link on other sites, associated with those very keywords. Which segues into:

Backlinks matter

If nothing else, take away that earning backlinks is the best way to improve search engine optimization. Google your organization name, and any sites which mention you but do not have a backlink, send a quick note asking if they can link to your site. The worst you’ll get is a no, and the best you’ll get is a ton more traffic.
