- Easy to use
- Easily scalable
- Unique web ending for name recognition
- Marginally more expensive than competitors
- Adoption limited to GOP affiliates
Join.gop is a domain registrar launched in 2014 by the Republican State Leadership Committee. When ICAAN expanded domain names, adding new endings other than .com, the RSLC quickly gained control of .gop domains.
Though join.gop has only been around for several years, it’s already seen extensive use by Republicans. At the federal level, the RNC built vote.gop for the 2016 Trump Campaign’s GOTV efforts. Additionally, over twenty state GOP parties – including those in Florida and Virginia – use .gop domains; even the Young Republicans and College Republicans have websites using .gop domains.
Domain Registrars and Web Endings
Join.gop stands out over other domain registrars on the market for two reasons. The first is that join.gop is the only domain registrar owned by a political party, providing a unique niche for GOP candidates and causes. While it is notoriously difficult to discover a quality .com, join.gop’s web ending allows for much more choice in URL addresses, increasing name recognition.
Purchasing a domain is as simple as visiting the join.gop webpage and creating an account. Setting up a username and password only requires a phone number, valid email address, and name. After logging in, domain availability and price can easily be checked with join.gop’s search engine. Alternative domain name options are also displayed alongside the searched term in case it is already taken, or in case multiple, similar domains are desired. From there, simply select and purchase.
Campaigns Large & Small
For those running larger campaigns requiring multiple domains, join.gop’s dashboard includes a domain tab for filtering, sorting, and organizing domains, as well as a .csv export feature for performing outside analytics. The website also includes standard domain registrar security features to protect sensitive data, like WHOIS privacy, two factor authentication, security questions, IP access logger, and an IP account lock.
For smaller campaigns without extensive technical skills and experience, join.gop’s simple dashboard makes starting easy with its add-ons tab. The add-ons – including a website builder, email box integration, shared hosting, and a SSL – provide all that is needed to get websites up and running on .gop domains. With the ability to integrate with Google apps for work, join.gop offers an easy tech solution for those without preferred plug-ins and software. As with it’s competitors like GoDaddy, we recommend using a dedicated CMS like WordPress or NationBuilder in the long run, rather than the registrar’s CMS.
The join.gop website provides account invoice history to track account transactions and auto renewal settings for one-time entry of credit card information. Join.gop prices its domains based on an annual, flat rate of $20.16 per year. Compared to competitors, this is slightly above the average domain cost per year, though obviously won’t break the bank. This price only includes domains – all other website services, including the add-ons, are additional.
Join.gop is comparable to competitor domain registrar services on the market in cost and function. join.gop domains allow for shorter, more memorable, and easier to access URLs clearly identifiable with Republican candidates and causes. Due to this specialization, join.gop is easily scalable to national causes and municipal level candidates alike.
Generally, we still recommend searching for a .com first, or even purchasing both and redirecting the .com to a .gop if you prefer the .gop extension. But since .com real estate is limited, .gop addresses are a great second option for Republican campaigns and organizations.
