You’ve seen the commercials, right? Vistaprint is on virtually every television channel selling itself as a boutique custom printing service. Whether you’ve purchased products from Vistaprint or not, the satisfaction, success, and quality of a customer’s experience on hinges print quality and order success.
More than business cards
Vistaprint is best known for its custom business card services. Customers can choose pre-designed card templates from an extensive catalog or create unique and new designs with Vistaprint’s generous customization features. The real value of Vistaprint’s services can be seen with their wide-ranging promotional offerings, including t-shirts, pens, corporate gifts, and promo boxes. Whatever your organization’s marketing and promotional needs are, it’s highly likely that Vistaprint can help.
The extensive catalog of product offerings could be considered overwhelming. Vistaprint has a plethora of products to choose from — which is excellent. However, due to poor navigation and lack of sufficient curation, the vast catalog quickly becomes a burden.
Built with uniformity and scalability in mind
One of the critical elements of Vistaprint’s business that differentiates it from competing vendors (e.g., Blurb, MOO, or GotPrint.com) is the website’s ability to offer uninformed marketing materials. Granted similar services do this, but the way Vistaprint approaches it is through easy-to-view product recommendations that reflect organizational color schemes, possible products for use, and logos at the time of checkout. GotPrint.com and MOO have similar approaches; however, the quantity of Vistaprint’s “uninformed” recommendations reflects in the product offering scale. Just remember that some users do appreciate the variety while others still want a curated, predetermined experience that is customizable.
Vistaprint offers professional graphic design services and corporate consultations when requested. The Vistaprint graphic design services compete with other managed services from GotPrint.com and MOO, with an industry-standard approach to design services and consultation. Typically, this approach revolves around client needs before any other concerns. The managed services available to customers also include website design and subscriptions to a DIY-website builder. Sadly, the website builder is too stripped down as it tries to focus on business landing pages over omnichannel content management.
Printing and fulfillment
When you design and order products from Vistaprint, all the “heavy lifting” is done in-house. Usually, this provides for generous and flexible delivery. Be warned, Vistaprint is notorious for messing up orders or misprinting designs. Shipping and delivery aren’t perfect either. The company has premium delivery options; however, mail or parcel circulation can significantly impact the successful, on-time arrival of a particular order.
Pricing for custom products (i.e., business cards, brochures, etc.) is determined by quantity, type of material used (e.g., type of paper), shipping parameters, and design elements. Therefore, pricing varies. Design services are determined by the nature of a client’s project. Enterprise plans begin at $99 annually.
What we think
Offering a wide array of products and services to millions of customers, Vistaprint could be considered the “Walmart” of custom printing. Usually sporting the lowest prices and the best products, customers can get premium quality marketing materials for a competitive price. Sadly, Vistaprint does have a reputation among customers for screwing up shipments and print jobs. Luckily, this is undercut by exceptional customer care and managed service.
